Description

Septoplasty is the name given to surgery for a deviated nasal septum (deviated nasal septum).

Septorhinoplasty combines surgery for the nasal septum with external nose surgery (aesthetic nose surgery).

Septoplasty and Septorhinoplasty

Facts

  • General anesthesia
  • One-Day surgery
  • Procedure takes about 2 hours
  • Recovery in 2-3 weeks

Septoplasty is used to correct the nasal septum if it is deviated to one side - whether from birth or after an injury.

The surgery is most often performed for:

  • Breathing and snoring disorders
  • Frequent inflammation and bleeding of the nasal mucosa
  • Headaches caused by a deviated septum (deviated septum)
  • Impaired sense of smell

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The surgery is performed through incisions in the inner part of the nose, so the scars are not visible.

Postoperatively, the patient must expect certain restrictions:

  • A tamponade is inserted into the nose for 1-3 days
  • Postoperative swelling lasts for several days
  • Respiratory adjustment is after 2 weeks
  • Recovery after 3 weeks

Septorhinoplasty combines the correction of a deviated (crooked) nasal septum (septoplasty) with the aesthetic modification of the external nose (rhinoplasty).

This is a more complex operation that is performed in the case of:

  • Impaired breathing caused by a deviated nasal septum
  • Deformity of the nose after an injury
  • Dissatisfaction with the aesthetic shape of the nose (crooked and asymmetrical nose, nasal hump - gibbus, too large tip of the nose)

The operation is also performed under general anesthesia, and the approach is differentiated according to the shape of the nose:

  • Open approach - an incision is made on the nasal columella and the soft parts of the nose are folded back. This makes the nose more accessible and can be more modeled - adjusted.
  • Closed approach - incisions are made on the inner part of the nose so that the scars are hidden.

Postoperatively, the patient must expect certain restrictions:

  • A tamponade is inserted into the nose for 1-3 days
  • The nose is usually reinforced from the outside with a splint (plastic, plaster, metal)
  • Postoperative swelling lasts for several days
  • Breathing adjustment is after 2 weeks
  • Recovery after 3-4 weeks

Operation of the nose is performed after the end of facial growth at the age of 18.

Unsuitable candidates are patients after repeated nose surgeries, in which the presence of scars threatens reduced blood circulation to the tissue.

Septorhinoplasty changes the shape of the nose, often an irreversible change. Therefore, consultation with a specialist doctor is important.

Some patient wishes cannot be fulfilled even with the most perfect execution. Unrealistic patient expectations are therefore one of the reasons for refusing surgery.
